Understanding Adverse Events in Cancer Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy represents a significant advance in cancer treatment by harnessing the body's immune system to target cancer cells. However, this approach can lead to the immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissues as well. This phenomenon results in adverse events, which can manifest as:

  • Intestinal inflammation (Colitis)
  • Liver inflammation (Hepatitis)
  • Lung inflammation (Pneumonitis)
  • Skin inflammation (Dermatitis)

These side effects vary from mild to severe and require strategic management through immunosuppressive therapies. These treatments help mitigate the immune response, aiming to minimize side effects while maintaining the effectiveness of the cancer treatment. Awareness and prompt management of these symptoms are crucial for patients and caregivers to ensure that the therapy's benefits outweigh its risks. Timely communication with healthcare providers is essential to adjust treatment plans as needed and maintain quality of life during therapy.
